Brainstorming Across the Four Buckets

To create a compelling essay, gather material across four key areas:

  • Background: Reflect on experiences that have shaped your academic and professional journey. Consider significant events, challenges, or influences that have motivated you to pursue a doctoral degree.
  • Achievements: List your accomplishments, focusing on metrics and outcomes. What projects have you led? What impact have they had on your community or field? Be specific about your role and contributions.
  • The Gap: Identify any gaps in your experience that the scholarship could help address. How will further study at Florida State University help you overcome these challenges and achieve your goals?

  1. Introduction: Start with a concrete moment or experience that illustrates your journey. Avoid generic statements.
  2. Background: Provide context for your academic and personal development.
  3. Achievements: Highlight key accomplishments, using specific examples and metrics.
  4. The Gap: Discuss what you aim to achieve with the scholarship and how it fits into your career trajectory.
  5. Personality: Weave in personal insights that humanize your application and reflect your values.
  6. Conclusion: Reinforce your commitment to making a positive impact in your field and how the scholarship will help you achieve that.

Drafting Voice and Style

Use an active voice throughout your essay. Each paragraph should focus on one main idea, with clear transitions to guide the reader. Show reflection by discussing what you learned from your experiences and why it matters. Avoid clichés and ensure every statement is backed by evidence or specific examples.

Revision and the “So What?” Factor

After drafting, revisit your essay with a critical eye. Ask yourself, “So what?” for each section. Does it clearly convey your motivations and potential impact? Consider seeking feedback from peers or mentors who can provide constructive criticism. Revise for clarity, coherence, and impact.

Common Pitfalls to Avoid

Be mindful of these common mistakes:

  • Avoid vague statements or generalizations about your passion. Instead, provide concrete examples.
  • Steer clear of passive voice and bureaucratic language. Keep your writing direct and engaging.
  • Do not invent facts or embellish your achievements; authenticity is key.

An application is possible at any time, there are no deadlines. Application requirements Application Requirements The last academic degree should have been completed no longer than 4 years prior to submission of the application; exceptions to this can be justified by pregnancies or proven prolonged periods of serious illness or incapacity for work. The 4-year interval should make it possible to complete preparatory services such as professional training (e.g. following a law degree or teaching degree) or vicariate before applying for a doctoral scholarship. If the doctoral programme is carried out at a German university, citizenship does not matter. In justified cases, doctorates abroad can also be funded; this presupposes that the doctoral candidate has German citizenship or a university entrance qualification acquired in Germany. Previous holders of scholarships from the Studienstiftung or the Max Weber Programme Bavaria may apply for a scholarship to participate in the academic programmes for doctoral students, without taking advantage of financial support for their PhD. The selection procedure is the same for all applicants. If funding for the doctoral thesis has been awarded by another funding body, this must be terminated at the latest 6 months following receipt of funding approval from the Studienstiftung; otherwise, the funding offer will expire. Funding for part-time doctoral degrees is not possible; this also applies to preparatory services and professional specialised training (e.g. psychotherapy). Doctoral students must have been admitted to doctoral studies at the university at which the dissertation is submitted in order to receive doctoral funding. Previous membership of the Studienstiftung is not a requirement for the doctoral programme.
