Center for Hellenic Studies

Center for Hellenic Studies is Harvard University’s research center for the study of ancient Greece and the broader Hellenic world. Founded in 1960 through a gift from Paul Mellon, the center advances scholarship in fields including Greek language and literature, philosophy, history, archaeology, religion, and the reception of Hellenic culture across time. Its main campus is in Washington, D.C., where it maintains a residential and intellectual community for scholars, while a second campus in Nafplio, Greece, extends its work in the Mediterranean.

The center’s work combines advanced research, teaching, publications, and public programming. It supports fellows and visiting researchers, hosts seminars and conferences, and develops digital resources for the study of Hellenic civilization. Its fellowship programs serve postdoctoral scholars, senior scholars, and others pursuing sustained research projects connected to Hellenic studies. The center also runs programs for educators and students, including opportunities tied to the teaching of classical subjects and the use of primary texts and scholarly tools.
