Mount Ida College was a private college in Newton, Massachusetts, that served undergraduate and graduate students with a career-focused academic model until it ceased operations in 2018. Founded in 1899, the institution developed from a business school into a residential college and offered programs across areas including business, design, veterinary technology, dental hygiene, and funeral service education. Its Newton campus sat on roughly 72 acres in the Boston metropolitan area, giving the college a regional identity tied closely to eastern Massachusetts while drawing students to specialized professional programs.
The college emphasized applied learning and small-college instruction. Mount Ida became especially known for distinctive offerings such as veterinary technology and funeral service education, alongside liberal arts and professional majors. In 2018, the college announced that it would close and entered an agreement under which the University of Massachusetts Amherst acquired the Newton campus. That transition created a new UMass Amherst presence in Newton and included arrangements intended to support Mount Ida students through transfer pathways and teach-out options. The closure marked the end of an institution that had operated for more than a century in Massachusetts higher education.
