The Reid R. Sacco AYA Cancer Alliance focuses on the needs of adolescents and young adults diagnosed with cancer and on the persistent gaps in care, research, and survivorship support affecting that population. Founded in 2005, the Alliance identifies itself as one of the earliest AYA cancer patient advocacy organizations established globally, and its work centers on raising awareness of AYA cancer while advancing practical solutions for an underserved patient group. It operates as an all-volunteer organization dedicated to improving the lives and outlook of adolescent and young adult cancer patients and survivors.
The Alliance’s agenda is organized around four primary initiatives for the coming decade: accelerating AYA-cancer-specific clinical research; expanding dedicated treatment and consultation services for AYA cancer patients; training and educating medical professionals through certifications and fellowships in AYA oncology and long-range survivorship care; and further developing a comprehensive online “one-stop-shop” resource for patients and survivors. That resource infrastructure is visible in its connection to the AYA Cancer Program at Tufts Medical Center, which manages a resource page addressing fertility, employment, education, financing, and insurance.
