Chadron State College is a public college in Chadron, Nebraska, and one of the three institutions in the Nebraska State College System. Founded in 1911, it serves students through undergraduate and graduate education with a regional role in western Nebraska and the surrounding High Plains. The college’s academic structure includes schools focused on business, education, liberal arts, mathematics and science, and professional studies, giving it a broad mission that spans teacher preparation, applied professional programs, and the arts and sciences. Its work centers on access to higher education for Nebraska residents and students from neighboring states, with both on-campus and online study options. Chadron State College offers more than 50 undergraduate majors and several graduate programs, including master’s degrees and education specialist pathways. The institution is also home to the Mari Sandoz Center, which preserves and interprets the legacy of Nebraska author Mari Sandoz and adds a distinctive humanities and regional-history dimension to the college’s identity. Student life and community engagement are integral to the college’s role. Chadron State competes in NCAA Division II athletics as the Eagles and supports residential, academic, and co-curricular experiences on its campus in the Pine Ridge region. As a state college, it combines teaching-focused higher education with service to rural communities, workforce preparation, and cultural programming. That mix of regional access, professional education, and place-based identity defines Chadron State College’s position within Nebraska public higher education.
